Coming Soon...

Baltimore was founded in 1661 at the end of the Petapsco River, in the West of the Chesapeake Bay. David Jones named the first neighborhood Jonestown and today it is in the Harbor East neighborhood. David Jones also named the Jones River & Falls NW of Downtown.

Today the Harbor East neighborhood is part of the greater Fells Point neighborhood which also includes Jonestown, Washington Hilll & Little Italy, with Upper Fells Point stretching past Patterson Park to Canton on the North Shore of the Petapsco River.

Washington Hill

Patterson Park is on top of Washington Hill on the north bank of the Petapsco River, overlooking Ft. McHenry on Federal Hill.

This area, Rodgers Bastion, was a strategic outpost during the War of 1812, there are still cannons there today showing the line of sight.

On 09/12/1814, a watchtower here observed the Battle of North End in Dundalk, MD only 7 Miles East of the Park, 2 days later on 09/14/1814, they saw the American flag flying high across the river at the fort after the Battle of Baltimore in the river.

President James Madison ordered Francis Scott Key to flee Baltimore after the Siege of Washington.

He was captured on a ship in the Harbor and watched through his window as the British were defeated, and saw the American flag waving high.

This inspired him to write our National Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner. See the original writing with all 4 verses local at XXX Museum.
