Massapequa Park has a nice small town feel while remaining a NYC Suburb, exactly one hour from Penn Station in Manhattan. On the South Side of the tracks, the neighborhoods gravitates towards the Atlantic Ocean at South Oyster Bay.

Take a nice walk down Block Blvd to Marjorie Post Park and enjoy the waterfowl! Some of these people are lucky enough to have a duckpond, a stream, or a city park in their backyard. Imagine, Private Property, No Trespassing, Big Green Lawns with riding lawnmowers, garages, pools, just outside NYC! Walk from your backyard pool to the LIRR to go out for a night on the town!

Jumpin' Jacks Jumpin' Jack's Drive-In Inc. in Scotia, NY start the 4th of July Fireworks Season in the Capital District every year at the end of June! This historic village was home to the first permanent settler on the Mohawk River in the 1650’s, Glen Sanders. It sits right across the Mohawk from Schenectady, NY Stockade and I sat on the riverfront at Gateway Park, at the site of Schenectadytown Harbor (1620-1819), on the campus of my almamater SUNY Schenectady County Community College to watch these fireworks.#JumpinJacks is a staple to the community and is known for riverfront takeout dining featuring burgers, hot dogs, onion rings, French fries, fried fish, popcorn, ice cream & milkshakes, plus their famous #jackburger They also host a waterski show riverfront at nearby Collins Park and have been serving hot & cold food riverfront since 1952.All Photos by #jrkdenterprises FB: Rome Around The World, Native Yorker 518, Jay Rome, JRKD Ent. The Little Lady Liberty Statue returns to remodeled Gateway Plaza in Schenectady, NY! This 8-foot statue has been there since 1950 (paid for by the Boy Scouts) and was the namesake of Liberty Park for over 65 years, but was removed in 2018 during the 5-year remodeling of the park which now includes a Stonewall Pride Monument, a new CDTA plaza with electric bikes & car rentals and a new Greyhound Station in 2023.

It’s back and better than ever, waving & welcoming everyone who enters Schenectady from the West. She faces the “Gateway Bridge” West across the Mohawk River to what was once the western border and frontier back in the 1600’s.

My family are historians and my Dad worked for the City Planning & Historical Preservation and he fought to keep this statue from being scrapped several times! It’s good people with respect for history and culture that preserve things for generations to come.

The Egg, As Seen From The South, Base Of Corning Tower
#theegg is a performing arts center, built from 1966-1978. The pedestal base is actually a 6-story stem that goes to the bottom of the Empire State Plaza and into the Ravine underneath between the 2 original Hills, Capital Hill & Cathedral Hill.
This gives the impression that the large bowl is placed on a tiny base when in fact it is a small bowl on top of a giant tower!
The Egg has 2 theatres, 450-Seat Lewis Swyee Theatre and 982 Seat Kitty Carlisle Hart Theatre.

Believe it or not, both theatres are underground, and the bowl is entirely empty, only an external facade. The Bowl is just the “eye catcher”
We have one of the most unique skylines of any small city in the country, no one else has an egg, bowl, or some as a feature of their skyline, except for sports stadiums. This is the only concrete bowl in the US!

It is also the only building at Empire State Plaza with exposed concrete, all of the others had imported stone fitted to the exteriors of their concrete structure. This is another reason The Egg stands out on the skyline. The Egg is also technically the only Brutalist Architecture in a Plaza full of International Style Towers, similar to the Twin Towers at World Trade Center.

Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company has been based here since the mid 1990’s. The Ajkun BalletTheatre has been based here since 2000 as well.

On the left is our 43 Floor Erastus Corning Tower (Tallest Building in NY outside of NYC), in front of that is The Egg, our performing arts center.
Center is our NY State Museum, Archives & Library. At right we can see 3 of the 4 Agency Towers that dot the West Side of the Plaza. Everything else you see is the 6th Floor Roof of the actual Empire State Plaza. In front of the museum is a reflective pool similar to the National Mall in DC.
The Corning Tower and the “Four Sisters” were built around the same time as the World Trade Center Twin Towers, and share a very similar style, uniquely New York.
The “Four Sisters” are a Native American legend about the traditional crops planted in the area.
Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) People planted Corn, Squash & Beans to supplement their diet. These 3 sisters work together and give each other nutrients each lacks. In later times, a fourth sister, sunflowers, were planted as well.
The Haudenosaunee people were 5 large tribes that ruled all of NY west of the Hudson, out to Michigan, Ohio and Ontario etc The Mohawks operated from Albany out to Utica and beyond, while the Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca ruled Western NY and beyond from the Great Tribal Fires near Rochester. They all feuded with Algonquins including the Mohicans and are featured in “Last of the Mohicans” by James Fennimore Cooper. The Iroquois Confederacy were the basis for the early American Confederation of the 1780’s before the US Constitution.

At Empire State Plaza in Albany, NY are some of the most unique architecture in all of NY outside of NYC.

For starters we are standing on the top floor of a 6-level underground Building known as the Main Plaza/Grand Concourse made of 240 Million Cubic Feet of concrete, and 600,000 Cubic Feet of imported stone! The street level is on the 6th floor roof because it was built inside of a ravine! The building is more than a quarter of a mile long with additional buildings off of every side of it going at least a block in every direction.
In 1962, only the center building (Alfred Smith) and right building (Ny State Capitol) were here, and over 1,200 row houses housed 7,000+ people over 98 acres in some of Albany’s oldest rundown derelict downtown neighborhoods dating back to the 1700’s.

The state seized the land and destroyed everything and built on every inch of it up until 1979. They wanted to seize more land and build a whole network of highways and underground tunnels extending into Washington Park and across Sheridan Hollow, but the City stopped the State from doing so, which lead to 787 along the riverfront instead.

At left is NY State Legislative Building, northwest corner of ESP. This was the first building completed in 1972.
Center is the 1928 Alfred Smith Building, a 34-story Art Deco Building and 2nd tallest building in Albany, named after our 4-time Governor before FDR. Until the Corning Tower (our Aerial View) was completed in 1976, the Alfred Smith’s 31st Floor Viewpoint was the highest viewing point on a building in NY outside of NYC.

At right is our NY State Capitol, an epic Romanesque French Chateau built 1867-1899. One of the most impressive Capitals of all the states. A tunnel runs underground from the Capitol all the way across the Plaza to the Museum and even further to the Executive Mansion.

In our State Capitol in Albany, the tallest skyscraper is the 589-Foot High 44-Floor Erastus Corning Tower!
Here from the 42nd Floor Viewing Area we are facing extreme right, straight down, SW along Eagle St in the Mansions Neighborhood in the South End of Albany.

The NY State Executive Mansion (Governor’s Mansion), an Italianate Mansion built in 1856 as a private residence. In 1875, Governor Samuel Tilden rented the Mansion for 2 years until the State purchased it as the Official Governor’s Residence while in Albany.
Teddy Roosevelt added a gymnasium and FDR added a swimming pool. The pool was converted to a Greenhouse, but Mario Cuomo restored the swimming pool. Alfred Smith had a private zoo on-site, while Nelson Rockefeller added the tennis courts .
29 consecutive Governors officially lived here until George Pataki in the 1990’s chose not to stay here.

In 2020 it was the HQ for Andrew Cuomo and his family during the COVID-19 Pandemic and he gave most of his nationwide speeches here on-site. There is an underground tunnel connecting the Mansion directly to the NY State Capitol, a half-mile North on Eagle St. This tunnel is one of at least 5 floors of underground chambers and tunnels under the Empire State Plaza which was built in a ravine.

A fire in 1961 almost totaled the Mansion but Governor Nelson Rockefeller fought for its restoration, and protected the Mansion Neighborhood on the National Historic Registry, also saving the Philip Schuyler Mansion, a few blocks SE of this photo. Philip Schuyler was a Colonial General and later US Senator, he lived here in Albany from 1761-1803 just off screen.

Bottom center is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1847. Twin Spires reach 210 Feet from the ground, while the church is 200 Feet Long and 100 Feet Wide, seating 2,500 parishioners. The Gothic Revival Cathedral was built of brick and sandstone, and took 5 years to construct.

On panoramas of Albany skyline prior to 1900, the Twin Spires are one of the most recognizable features of the skyline, they predate the State Capitol even. This is the 2nd Oldest Cathedral in New York after St. Patrick’s in NYC, it is the 3rd oldest in all of the US. This was the tallest building in Albany until the City Hall was built in 1883 with a 210 Foot Tower and Cathedral of All Saints also 210 Feet built in 1888. It was the NY State Capitol in 1899 that finally dwarfed the spires at 220 Feet. The tower we are standing in is 2.5 times as tall as the spires.

On the right is the left (East)side of the New York State Museum, a full 2 blocks away from our tower. The museum is 10-stories tall and takes up 1.5 Million Square Feet!
The museum opened on July 4, 1976 to fireworks in Empire State Plaza, and was one of the final completions of the ESP.
First Ny State Museum, Archives & library were organized in 1818/36
A large majority of historical records prior to 1911 were destroyed in the NY State Capitol Fire. The remains were moved to the State Education Building (Long Green Roofed Column Building from 1st slide) from 1912-1976.

Over 450,000 books and 270,000 manuscripts were damaged/lost from fire and the water from fire hoses. Some of our historic records from 1614 are long gone unfortunately.

Bottom center is the NY State WW2 Memorial, dedicated in 2001. 1.7 Million New Yorkers served in WW2, 62,000 wounded and 28,000 deceased. We fought in every fight from Battle of the Bulge to Iwo Jima to Normandy and even died at Pearl Harbor.

One thing undeniable about NY State is our love for Police, Firefighters & Troops! 👮🏾‍♀️👩‍🚒🫡

Highlight of the Memorial is the Stainless Steel Eagle, cast in Beacon, NY

Here from the 42nd Floor Viewing Area we are facing right towards Albany’s South End neighborhoods like Lincoln Park, Mansions, Delaware Ave & Second Ave. In the background are southern towns in Albany County like Glenmont, Bethlehem & Elsmere, surrounded by the Catskills & the Helderberg Escarpment.

Bottom center is the NY State Executive Mansion and Governor’s HQ. Above it is the Eagle Street School and St. Joseph’s Convent. The right side of the photo is the Football Field at Lincoln Park, offscreen right is a large park with playgrounds, swim pads and a swimming pool.
A Beaver Creek used to run downhill West of Albany into the Hudson River and ran right through the park, but it was dammed up and the Washington Park Lake was created about a mile to the West.
We can imagine this land was once part of many streams and marshes that connected and have since been filled in. One of the reasons the Dutch loved this land was all of the streams and rivers that reminded them of home.

Here from the 42nd Floor Viewing Area we are facing right towards Albany’s South End neighborhoods like Lincoln Park, Mansions, Delaware Ave & Second Ave. In the background are southern towns in Albany County like Glenmont, Bethlehem & Elsmere, surrounded by the Catskills & the Helderberg Escarpment.

Bottom center is the NY State Executive Mansion and Governor’s HQ. Above it is the Eagle Street School and St. Joseph’s Convent. The right side of the photo is the Football Field at Lincoln Park, offscreen right is a large park with playgrounds, swim pads and a swimming pool.
A Beaver Creek used to run downhill West of Albany into the Hudson River and ran right through the park, but it was dammed up and the Washington Park Lake was created about a mile to the West.
We can imagine this land was once part of many streams and marshes that connected and have since been filled in. One of the reasons the Dutch loved this land was all of the streams and rivers that reminded them of home.

In our State Capitol in Albany, the tallest skyscraper is the 589-Foot High 44-Floor Erastus Corning Tower!
Here, from the 42nd floor viewing area, we are facing right over Albany’s South End neighborhoods like Krank Park, Cherry Hill, Second Ave, Delaware Ave, Westerlo, Mansions & Lincoln Park. In the distance are the Catskill Mountains & Helderberg Escarpment.

The straightaway in bottom right is Eagle St which ran right through the center of old Albany’s downtown and remains underground as the Concourse. Just offscreen right is the twin/spired Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception from 1842 and Ny State Governor’s Mansion from 1856 as well as Lincoln Park.

This is a good example of what the old neighborhoods in Albany looked like before half of downtown was destroyed to make way for the Empire State Plaza. This is a stark contrast to the previous pictures of newer architecture and historic town centers on the North Side of the Plaza.

There are a few historic churches, this area is mostly residential. A lot of 2-4 story brick walk ups from various eras ranging from early 1800s to mid1900s. The Mansions neighborhood is named after the Philip Schuyler Mansion & the New York State Executive Mansion (Governor’s HQ).

One of the Islands was called Castle Island and was the site of the original Fort Nassau from 1614 which flooded every year.

In our State Capitol in Albany, the tallest skyscraper is the 589-Foot High 44-Floor Erastus Corning Tower!
Here from the 42nd Floor Viewing Area we are facing straight ahead, easterly to the East, slightly to the South at the Dunn Memorial Bridge & Rensselaer across the Hudson River.

787 was a freeway built along the West Bank of the riverfront in the 1960’s linking Troy & Albany, through Watervliet & Menands with exits for Green Island & Cohoes also, running from Route 7 south to Exit 23 if I-90 at 9W.
The Dunn Memorial Bridge was built across the river in 1969, at an elevation of 60 feet over the river. The various circular entrance/exit ramps take up a huge foot print as well as the elevated bridge ramps.
Plans are in the work to knock down all of the expressway and bridges in this picture on both sides of the river, and reclaim over 100 acres of parkland, 80+ being on the waterfront.
Historians believe the Dunn Bridge is built over the location of the original Fort Orange from 1624. They discovered artifacts and buried basements from the 1600’s during construction, but these plans were part of a citywide restructuring and we could not move the bridge elsewhere to excavate.
All of these empty underused parking lots can be converted to park space as well. Highway traffic would be diverted away from downtown, and locals can enjoy easier access to a beautiful waterfront on both sides of the river, as well as a walkable bridge to access Amtrak across the river.

The Parliament-Looking Structure at Left on the Riverfront is the 1914 D&H Railroad HQ (Delaware & Hudson), which today is the HQ for all of SUNY (State Universities of New York). The building is over 660 Feet long and continues to the left offscreen. It is built on the site of the traditional downtown landing f prior to the Erie Canal. Up until 1820’s ships would come land right here and drop off goods, then later they would go half a mile north and enter the Erie Canal at Lock 1 (Central Warehouse Building)
There is an 8 Foot Tall Weathervane (Replica of Henry Hudson’s ship Halve Maen) atop the green Spire in the center of the building. It is very unique architecture for this part of the country, and the NY State Capitol just up the street pairs nicely, they both remind me of Canadian Parliament in Ottawa.

There are current plans in the work under Albany Riverfront Revitalization project to knock down all of the elevated highway ramps, and build a street level bridge & pier across the River, while reopening the Erie Canal and putting a Riviera/Harbor downtown directly in front of the SUNY Building. The plan will reclaim over 100 acres of waterfront parkland on both sides of the river, and many of these large empty parking lots and ramps will become parks or waterways. We are aiming for a little Netherlands-themed Canal Town/Biking & Pedestrian Zones, downtown along the Riverfront. Think Providence, RI.

The long White Roofed building on bottom Left was the Times Union Center in 2017, currently known as MVP Arena, it was built as the Knickerbocker Arena in 1990 and can hold 17,500 people at capacity.

It hosted the 1992 WWF Royal Rumble. We have had National Champions in Arena Football (Albany Firebirds & Conquest & Empire), AHL Hockey (River Rats), & Lacrosse (FireWolves). Every year in November, I attended the Albany Cup (Siena College vs UAlbany) Men’s Basketball, we have hosted the NCAA Final Four, competing rallies from HRC & DTJ, as well as popular comedians & performers, monster truck rallies, pro wrestling, Billy Graham, you name it.

Center of the photo, on the bottom side of the riverfront, is Jenning’s Landing, accessed by the Pedestrian Bridge over 787, where we host free concerts along the Hudson River in summer called Alive At Five! Across the river over the horizon are the Berkshires, Northern Massachusetts.

The Romanesque/style Red Roofed Building with Tower at center left is Albany City Hall, built in 1883 with a 202 Foot Bell Tower and 49-bell Carillon.
The Philip Schuyler statue used to stand right in front of the building.
The smaller white marble building with Rotunda, behind City Hall, is the NY State Court of Appeals, a 3-story 1841 Greek Revival.
Behind it is the block long Albany County Supreme Court, a 1912 neoclassical. A block to the east is the Albany County Courthouse . In front of that building with a red brick tower and green peaked roof is the 1796 St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, the oldest standing church in Albany.
2 blocks closer towards us, dead center left, the
Brownstone Church with the 180 Foot Peaked Twin Spires, is St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, a French Gothic Revival built from 1859-1876. This Church is built on an extreme slope and is roughly the exact same height as the City Hall Tower, look at the difference. St.Peters sits on the site of Fort Frederick, 1767-1701, the first Dutch fort off of the riverfront. Everything East of the Fort was a Stockade. In 1701, they moved the Fort further up the Hill West to the site of Capitol Hill today, and this is the 3rd Church here since 1701.
Directly behind St Peters towards St Mary’s is Albany Masonic Temple (This block is Lodge Street), an 1896 building for a 1737 Lodge, which was the first lodge in NY outside NYC.
Bottom center is block-long Wellington Hotel from 1905. Top center, Central Warehouse Building, once burnt for a week straight, still standing.

In our State Capitol in Albany, the tallest skyscraper is the 589-Foot High 44-Floor Erastus Corning Tower!
Here from the 42nd Floor Viewing Area we are facing slight left, Northeasterly towards North Albany west of the Hudson River and Defreestville on the East Side across the river.

The parliament-looking structure with the red peaked roofs on the left is our NY State Capitol (built from
1868-1899), one of the few State Capitols without a dome, but also one of the most impressive looking state capitols, period. Some would say it’s the most European looking State Capitol in the US. It pairs nicely with the similar parliament-like structure, D&W SUNY Building, just offscreen to the right.

The extreme bottom left of this picture is the roof of The Egg, a dual theatre, 1500 seat performing arts venue, inside of a giant Half-Moon looking Egg. 🥚

The Greek looking building center left is the Appellate Court Building.

The 10-ish Story Thin Buildings on State St & Park St in center are office buildings, one of which currently hosts Albany War Room Tavern & The Bull Moose Club.
Directly above them, smaller green patina dome on the red brick building is a Federal Style Brownstone from 1815 known as The Old Albany Academy, and the open park to the left is Academy Park, our current Gold Star Veterans Memorial Park, which used to host the Dudley Observatory for Astronomy. In 1820, Joseph Henry discovered Electrical Induction on-site which led to the Telegraph. Behind the academy is Elk Row and the former NY Governor’s Mansion of the 1800’s.

Here from the 42nd Floor Viewing Area we are facing extreme left, due north towards Latham.

The art deco skyscraper on the far left is the Alfred Smith building, named after Gov. Al Smith, built in 1928, and was a test run for the Empire State Building, 1931, which would become the world’s tallest building. This was the tallest building outside of NYC until the Corning Tower we are standing in was built in 1973.
The shorter, long green roofed building is the NY State Education Building, built in 1912 as the NY State Museum, and with 36 Corinthian Columns at 590 Feet Long it is the longest Colonnaded building in the USA.
